Feeding Behavior of Coralliophila sp. on Corals Affected by Caribbean Ciliate Infection (CCI): A New Possible Vector?

چکیده
Coral reefs in the Caribbean are known to be affected by many coral diseases, yet ecology and etiology of most diseases remain understudied. The ciliate infection (CCI) caused ciliates belonging genus Halofolliculina is a common disease on reefs, with direct contact considered likely way through which can transmitted between infected healthy colonies. Here we report an observation regarding Coralliophila sp. snail feeding proximity cluster forming typical band CCI. result this twofold. behavior may allow passive attachment body or shell resulting indirect transport among colonies, makes it eligible as possible vector. Alternatively, lesions created from enhance progression already present well promoting additional infections allowing pathogens enter scar.

Infection with a plant virus modifies vector feeding behavior.
Vector infection by some animal-infecting parasites results in altered feeding that enhances transmission. Modification of vector behavior is of broad adaptive significance, as parasite fitness relies on passage to a new host, and vector feeding is nearly always essential for transmission. Although several plant viruses infect their insect vectors, we have shown that vector infection by a plant...

Tissue mortality by Caribbean ciliate infection and white band disease in three reef-building coral species
Caribbean ciliate infection (CCI) and white band disease (WBD) are diseases that affect a multitude of coral hosts and are associated with rapid rates of tissue losses, thus contributing to declining coral cover in Caribbean reefs. In this study we compared tissue mortality rates associated to CCI in three species of corals with different growth forms: Orbicella faveolata (massive-boulder), O. ...
متن کاملEffect of stony corals extracts on feeding by Acanthaster planci
The preference of the starfish Acanthasterplanci (Linnaeus, 1758) for 3 species of corals which survive A. planci outbreaks (Diploastrea heliopora, Porites rus, and Coscinaraea colurnna), and the effects of organic and aqueous extracts of these corals on A. planci feeding, were investigated experimentally in the laboratory. We hypothesized that extracts of these corals deter feeding by A. planc...
